I will say this much. With the Archaic Infantry Defense and Infantry Combat cards Spanish crossbows have similar HP and attack as a skirmisher. I do not remember offhand about their ranged resist and RoF, though. I have a deck with both those cards, and when I use that deck I often sprinkle some xbows into the mass of skirms to preserve their firepower while I save that gold for more rods or lancers.
the main downside of crossbows is the following:
cost wood
limited range of 16
low multiplier vs heavy infantry.

spain only need buff rod a bonus vs heavy infantry
and replacing skirmisher to arquebusier, like a skirmish but arcaic, a little cheap and weak but they gain a buf dmg or range when they stay near to pikemen (tercio tactic, rework card maby?)
spain without arquebusier is like a british whitout red coat or french whitout cuirassier

Crossbows cannot be eliminated as they were widely used by the Spanish in America.
I think they should replace the musketeer with the Spanish arquebusier, since we were the forerunners. A unit that has little range, slow but with good attack and good melee since they had the rapier sword and we were the best swordsmen. Fencing is a Spanish sport in case you didnāt know.

Yeah Spain was a big player during the early colonial period. Iām not sure I would say they dominated Europe for 200 years, since they didnāt really conquer anybody in Europe but it canāt be denied they were important during that period. Militarily Spain at the height of their power was not as powerful as England or France at the height of their power, but they still were a major player during the early colonial period

forget that all, the unit in the game called āconquistadorā never existed in reality, the conquistador are only a leaders who command their troops, like Hernan cortes or Pizarro, the truly unit of spain is 3, the pikemen, the rodelero but above all the arquebusier.
is truly painfull when pikemen are useless, the rod have bonus vs horsemenĀæ?Āæ?? when they historically designed to fight vs other pikemen and assaults some ships, and directly we dont have arquebusier.
fun fact: the game tell you spain gain so much gold many than other civs but spain is one of the poorest civs of the game.
