really? Because in the past 20 days you have played one hybrid or a water map total, and it wasn’t one in the map pool.

I can play death match, regicide, and nomad or empire wars more often and of course I will slowly get better at them, it’s also made a little easier because the standard mode helps in most cases, even if it’s not a 1:1 transfer of elo.

My time to play as of late has been very limited, what you see on my account is me not playing much at all while I fix my life situations.

all those others are game modes. nomad is not.

Because nomad cannot or could not be added like regicide and death match without adding in game breaking bugs to many map scripts.

Vills inside trees or resources, for instance, or getting attacked by wolves off the bat.

Hence tailored map scripts specifically made for the mode to exist.

yeah because aggressive animals and random resource distribution doesn’t occur in other age games. oh wait. they do.

other game modes modify either the starting age or the win con
other game modes can be played on ANY MAP.

nomad does not meet EITHER OF THESE CRITERIA.

Nomad modfies starting positions, and the starting position of multiple villagers across the map. It cannot be played on every map script without heavily modifying those codes in each one.

Hence tailored map scripts rather than being added to the drop box like regicide and death match.

We know without a doubt that nomad is a separate mode because of these factors, in age 1 it was properly labeled and in age 2 is was also properly labeled, albeit limited and kept out of the drop box and limited to tailored map scripts due to possible large bugs that kept it from being added to the drop box.

its almost like its called “Random Map”.
What seperates RM from other game modes.
starting age (empire wars, death match).
win con (regicide, koth, sudden death, ctr, defend wonder, wonder race).

It’s called random map, not random starting villagers/town centers or randomly starting with or without normal scouts.
If feudal/empire wars started in dark age it would still be a different mode from the standard start.

Random map scripts are random map scripts. Nomad random map scripts are map scripts tailored for nomad, while regular random map scripts are tailored 99% of the time for the standard start game mode as well as for when you wish to use the drop box to add in the other modes such as death match and regicide.

Arena differs more from Arabia than nomad differs from Other Hybrid Maps. Change my mind.

nomad start can actually be implemented on every map. it isn’t programmed that way, but there’s nothing preventing it. it would often be a waste of time (eg. migration/islands would put all your villagers on your starting island for balance reasons), but it’s trivial to do

if you want to complain about something that’s actually a separate mode, look at the garbage that is arena:

  • you start with 1200 res of stonewalls and don’t have to spend the 15 minutes of villager buildtime to make them
  • civs without the technology get them too. civs with bonuses for building them don’t get to leverage those. this destroys the concept of asymmetry and limited tech trees
  • there’s no water. there’s no elevation. almost no exploration
  • it’s not much of a random map, and is closer to a custom scenario
  • when dark+feudal age is skipped it’s basically like playing empire wars instead of RM

all nomad does is fail to give you a scout for free, and there are even nomad scripts that do provide a non-combat scout

but even without one, scouting is still a huge part of a nomad game, even more than maps where you are given a SC. DE ladder maps are so dumbed down that the SC isn’t even necessary to truly explore the unknown. it’s more useful as a military unit and to push deer.

in a lot of rotations, DE ladder fails to include actual strategy maps like coastal or rivers or migration or blind random or maps designed after 2000, so nomad is usually one of the only ones that lets us play more than a tiny subset of the game design. and DE used to have a much better version where the landmass wasn’t always just the same socotra island every time, but they dumbed that down too. the old nomad script was closer to coastal, which is a true random map

most of the ladder maps should be ones like coastal where every civ bonus is relevant and every unit has a role and every age matters and exploration matters. instead, they usually put 3 one-dimensial land maps where only xbows/knights matter. then they put 1 or 2 arenas or easily-enclosed maps where most of the ages get skipped. sometimes, there’s might be 1 water map where only galleys matter, and only a few civ bonuses matter

if we’re lucky, maybe 1 or 2 maps will let you play something where the actual mechanics of the game are present, and you have 327 posts lobbying for even that to be removed :man_facepalming:

nomad introduces civ balance issues, so it’s not as suitable compared to the hundreds of coastal-like maps that have been made over the decades. but short of having competent balance patches, it should be played with random civilizations to address that. don’t know why we can’t queue for random civ games. it’s yet another failing of AoE2 : DumbedDown Edition

Hidden pick civs is a wonderful addition to the community. No longer are we forced into random civ lobbies or face un-sportsmanlike intentional counterpicks. I’ve always avoided random civ lobbies like the plague, and I still do. Civ pick in its current state is very sportsman-like. The most we could change for the better is to lock in the civ upon queueing and have the player numbers have no tie to civ position, Regardless of what map pops up.

I would love for further map variety. In the current system of limited maps in the pool I desire less insta ban game modes and more map variety.

In a better system, the voting system should be done away with.

Replacing it with:

  1. All random map scripts available are placed in the queue

  2. You may ban up to 49% of the maps

  3. You may star up to 51% of the maps

  4. Maps with stars by both players will gain priority

Etc: this will ensure that, most of the time, the maps played will be the ones both or all players actually like.

All of this with some editing for team games, but essentially this for 1 vs 1.

And queue times will remain short because you will not be able to ban every single map even if both you and your foe each ban separate maps from eachother; there will always be at least 2% of maps remaining.

And in this better system, nomad needs its own elo/ranked lobby or queue or both to survive.

Every map should have random start.

I believe that every map should have the ability to become nomad if the devs can make it so. Just like every map may become death match or regicide.

And most certainly, another game mode with the ability for the start to be randomized similar to mega random or hyper random could also be created and produced on all maps within the same venue as nomad might if, and only if, the devs put in the work.
