It is as fair for me to Alt-F4 as it is unfair that the system places me in settings I don’t want. I have played 95% of my games on Arabia since 2010, and barely know any other build order, do you think it’s fair to force me to play Islands once in a while because 1 guy in the lobby decided to ban Arabia and was matched with me, when the system could have prevented it in the first place ?
It doesn’t matter how much. By decreasing Elo artificially for any other variable than skill, you only create unbalanced games until people go back to their true rating anyway.

Why? Then they will ruin games for the next group they are matched with on their favourite map… because they will be lesser skilled.

Ranked has a lot of issues to have worked out. More bans for 3v3 and 2v2 would be nice. I almost never play 4v4 anymore because I don’t want to be the jerk that picks a pocket colour right away. Sometimes it’s nice to sit back and boom a little, and I don’t mind playing flank. But not every time. If I get a pocket coward who chooses Khmer I will probably alt+f4 too. But I just don’t deal with playing 4v4 until they fix the team positions option.
I would like unlimited bans, ideally. Then I’d agree there would no longer be excuses for Alt-F4 and I would not oppose a harsher punishment system.

Well this is an entilted but valid statement but it doesnt justify that you can still learn them and play more varity or you could go unranked lobbys arabia only and have your fun there
this state of thinking is more or likely a good reason the community will fall appart because people stay stubborn and dont wanna adjust
OP here. The discussion starts getting toxic a little bit and I’m sorry if I have contributed to it. Some people have insulted me unnecessarily as if my point was to incentivize alt f4. I opened this thread to underline that alt f4 is a problem (I am part of it) and what we could to to ensure that people don’t alt f4 while being offered the incentive to keep playing the game.
Anything mentioned here like “go play lobby” or “stop playing” or “elo penalty” are not serious suggestions because clearly people want to play the matchmaking ranked mode with their own preferences. The reason we have a preferred map option is exactly this actually. To give players the option to play what they want. Maybe a compromise could be having Arabia or another popular nap such as Arena to have their own modes. I agree with the criticism that this could increase queue times. But if that’s the case, it’s fair. I’d be willing to play Arabia with an increased queue time and I wouldn’t have to alt f4 and I wouldn’t waste anyone’s time. Effectively when I do altf4, I increase my and others’ queue time.
I’m not going to comment anymore because it feels like we’re in the same loop. Thanks for your comments anyways.
PS : I keep mentioning that this is not the Olympics, because this is just a game. Didn’t want to insult anybody. Of course I love the Competition and that’s why I play ranked (I am a 1300 elo noob), and I love playing open maps like Arabia. I also play this game since 1999 and got back into it thanks to Covid DE, and the nicely designed matchmaking system. The point is how do we have a system where everybody is happy.

Who should ultimately decide if I want to play variety or not ? Me, or the game ?
The unranked lobby is terrible. Not sure if you’ve tried it. I’d rather not play.
Adjust to a stupid system ? Let’s imagine the government decides that you are no longer allowed to speak your native language because you already have been speaking it for years and does not promote variety, would you adjust and learn Polish ?

YOU are willing to have increased q times. Me and many others are not. Its just increadible how egocentric every single one of your posts is. Its always “i want, therefor i do”. Usually, people learn that our society cant function like this. A person forcing their will on others (which you do by alt+f4) is usually seen as a bully or an idiot, depending on his power.

If anything you are the one being egocentric. OP suggests a solution which arranges both communities: those who like the current system, and those who don’t. You on the other hand, want him to play with settings that he doesn’t enjoy, to improve your own queue times (which is not even true, because even though you will find people quickly, they are going to Alt-f4).
Let me remind you one thing: for 15+ years;, people were free to play the maps they wanted, and we just had a 50k$ Arabia-only tournament so an Arabia-only queue would definitely be very competitive. Just because DE devs decided to implement a ranked map pool that suits you, doesn’t make you entitled to call players who like other settings “egocentric”.

Unless you know a thing about game theory and know it wont arange but communities but create focal points - just like in “the good old days”. Its just “yeah you can play a map that isnt arabia, gl waiting 30minutes”.

Sure, then I guess by your same game theory logic the DM queue should not exist either, since it would create focal points and everyone would end up playing RM anyway to have lower queue times. But guess what, it’s absolutely not what happens.
So you claim at the same time that the majority of the community wants to play different maps, yet that this same majority would play only Arabia if it was possible ? Since you’re into game theory, I’m pretty sure the global satisfaction would be maximized with such a system even though people could end up playing only Arabia.
Do you prefer pizza over broccoli? I guess yes. Would you like to have to eat pizza every day for the rest of your life? I dont think so.
Prefering something doesnt mean you want it to be shoved in your face 24/7.

But it’s definitely better than having something you DON’T like pushed in your face 24/7. Which the current system allows. The only way we end up with focal points is if a significant number of players wants to play only one thing, and then that means the current system is terrible, since it doesn’t allow them to do so. Yes, people who like variety will have higher queue times, but since you speak about game theory, honestly, please tell which system do you think is the one that maximizes satisfaction.

Keep in mind that unlimited bans or an opt-in system would not only serve arabia players, but anyone with a preference.
Also it’s not only for people who play 1 map all the time, but for anyone that feels like playing something specific at any point.

The thing is that queue times increase only for those that want to play maps that noone else wants to play. So it is fair in that you want those maps so you wait longer, but everyone that plays with you actually wants to play that map.
The arabia guys however will have short queue times bc they play what most people want to play.
The current system also increases queue times, but for the ones that want to play the most wanted maps. Which is unfair bc a common principle of fairness is that the one that wants something special has to pay a higher price, be it money or time to get it. If you want bacon bread instead of normal bread you should have to do the extra effort to find it and pay more and not the 90% that want normal bread (aka arabia)
It’s stupid that one guy can ban arabia and fav bf and 7 guys fav arabia and in the end all 8 have to play bf bc of that one guy and he then complains it’s egoistic that one of the other 7 leaves.
We can also just remove the bans and let people do unlimited favourit picks that stack. Then we play always play the one with the most votes (then we see who s the mayority and who should make the custom lobbys) or there is a weighted randomness that if 1of 8 players favs bf and 7arabia there is a 1/8 chance for bf.
If we do that it will suck for the ones that don’t like like the maps the mayority likes…
But hey like so many love to propose to arabia only players, why don’t you open a custom lobby? Or you know, accept a matchmaking system that gives longer waiting times for those that want to play things fewer people want to play.
Or we can add real world diplo into ranked, bc why should those poor souls have to wait longer for their games? Let’s just force everyone in ranked queue to joint there.

have been waiting for over 45mins now
every 5 to 10 mins there’s a matching but people just alt F4 quiting it.
This issue has been raised by other so long time ago and sadly this is never going to improved.
