I hate the enchanted grove biome so much. I couldn’t think of a lazier way to implement such content, and I work with these things. Frankly, it has always made me question just how much Microsoft has invested into keeping the project alive–because if this is the outcome, either the contracted higher ups are pocketing most of the funds, or there are some severe management issues at play. Because just one artist could do so much more.
The other seasonal biomes have proved to be much better. But, yea, I just can’t fathom the ball fumbling sometimes. I suppouse my suspicions weren’t far off the mark considering how they effectively imploded this year.
EDIT: I’ll reiterate that the new seasonal biomes are so much better, so whether it was because of feedback, or because they got it together for that period, I’m just happy to see improvement and hope to see more in the future.
See that’s what i mean. As someone who doesn’t own this game (compared to pretty much all other empires titles) I’m just put off by all of the little things. Like those golden lightning strikes coming to mind.
I’ve talked with friends of mine (also age fans for twenty years) when this game was in beta and they felt disappointed too, mainly by the casual artstyle direction. Maybe we’re old farts, it is what it is^^
The tedious thing is the right thing in this instance. It actually makes the conversation about a shared context that can be discussed despite our difference in opinion.
Talking about being gaslit… that’s not a conversation, that’s you being defensive and accusing everyone else of lying or deceiving you instead of talking to them. Telling me that the audience is fortnight kids… that’s not a conversation, it’s an insult and a showcase of your bias, one that paints a disdain for youth and a perception of immaturity you see in the people you’re speaking to.
It’s just low level stuff man. You want to talk about the grass being too bright, sure… you see it that way. You want to say it’s fluorescent? No, it isn’t. It objectively is not.
At least come correct when you want to be objective.
I’d love for the grass to look closer to that fluorescent image than what it actually looks like. Grass (and everything else) in the game looks washed out after the complaints of the game looking “cartoony”.
Turns out, the game is going to look “cartoony” whether it is colourful or not. It just happens that more saturated lighting was the ideal presentation for the assets at hand. So now we have stylized models with dreadful colour.
I really urge and challenge anyone in these offices to go back on this change. I don’t care of some council told you to do it. They were wrong.
The bottom image is how it looks like now. The above, is how it was intended to look. What you’re complaining about, isn’t real. In fact, the complaint stems from the same group that complained so hard pre-launch that made them make the mistake of making the game look dull and washed out after the fact.
And still, after doing this, we have people like you still not satisfied. What was the point?
So here is the truth about whoever approaches you with “no no it’s not that you cannot criticize, but you have to make constructive criticism”:
They gradually and secretly shorten the list of accepted constructive criticism over time. Once they admit (reluctantly) “weapons lacking metallic texture” into the constructive criticism list. Now it is not approved anymore.
Give them more time and the game and its poor lil developers will live happy ever after.
This does indeed look better to me. So seems like the devs agreed and rolled some of the effects back already (although some coworkers seem to not have gotten the memo and continue to pretend the game is fine^^).
Maybe a proper rescaling of building sizes will be added in the future, who knows
More along the lines of: “please bring examples so that we can share an understanding”
It’s hard to talk about what is or isn’t through words alone, and it would help a lot to see through images or video of what someone is talking about. It makes even more sense when you consider that we’re talking about a visual medium.
Having approval from others on your subjective understanding isn’t guaranteed anyways. No one here needs to agree about how they feel to talk to each other.
From what I’ve seen it’s not enough. The barracks i think still look unproportional , lots of units are too big to fit into doors and are taller than roofs still. I might be wrong though as you said
I intended to play, but was put off by the mobile/casual visuals. Like many others
They are plastic, there is no shiny lighting effect on those metals.
Only plastics look like grey sticks as they are now in the game.
Also, static animals in the building are stupid. Where is the effort? Or is it a subjective opinion?
You wanted complete proportionality? I’m all for fixing proportions, but even that is too much for a game of Age of Empires. Units should be visible and buildings need not be real life-sized.
However I have insisted on consistent proportions between things. Buildings should be roughly the same as each other (in terms of proportions), not a mix of different sizes. Units on the other hand; this is not Total War and there is no reason for them to be as small as ants. The intention is for you to micro even singular units, for that is what Age of Empires is.
