Correction. Aztec Eagle Warrior is another ranged shock infantry, it is a native unit that can be rescued from treasure some map.
Chinese is especially good vs aztecs because of repelling volley. But Portuguese skirm has a lot of range resist so i think they do the job too but not as well as Chinese.
oh yeah I forgot, that unit used to be a skrim type but it did became a range shock infantry
Nerf ERKs and you can delete Aztecs from the game.
Aztecs need some kind of anti skirmisher bonus on a range unit, like the new royal ones. Maybe AKs, with a penalty vs cavalry; idk. At least on imperial age
They are actually a cav type, they get killed with pikeman units.

I don’t understand why the ERK has a special tag just for itself.
Surely it could be shock infantry+light ranged cavalry (no actual cavalry tag) without breaking things.
They arent the only ones, AKs, gatling camels and fixed artillery get unique bonus/penalties to balance their uniqueness
But Eagles are the only one that has a tag that’s unique only to them and totally superfluous, making balance work just tedious.
A pro doesn’t rely on that.

That would make them get countered by dragoons and be more resistant to Skirmishers which isn’t consistent with other units in that role.
And they might not always be the only ranged shock infantry. I made a suggestion for an African unit that could fit that role:

Skirmishers when they attack counter-cavalry (such as dragoons) have their damage reduced to 75% (due to the cavalry tag) then doubled (due to the light ranged cavalry tag) to a total of 150%. All I meant is they could have been given the light ranged cavalry tag instead of their own unique tag and nothing would be different except the devs wouldn’t be needing to doing extra work for every foot archer/skirmisher (also less chance of a mistake).
Shock infantry are not countered by dragoons, what are countered are units with the Coyotemen tag which does not include eagle runner knights such as coyote runners chimu runners and Shotel warriors.
Nope it’s there, it’s just hidden and has no icon just like heavy hand infantry before it got an icon.
small note, the interaction for the ERK is slightly different
skirms damage reduction for shock infantry only applies to hand shock infantry (the cotoyeman tag) and not all shock infantry
so skirms deal the full x2 damage to erk
on the tag point I definitely think they plan to have more range shock infantry down the line and want to plan around that rather then not being able to differentiate them from normal range cav later
You were suggesting they have the tags “shock infantry” and “light cavalry”. Coyotemen are hand shock infantry and Eagle Runners are ranged shock infantry. I’m assuming those are different tags, but they’re both called shock infantry.
Coyote Runners and the like (Shotel) have the Shock Infantry and Hand shock infantry tag and the hand infantry tag. Hand infantry tag means they benefit from infantry breastplate not the cavalry one.
Eagle runners have the shock infantry, archer, ranged infantry and their own special tag which might as well be light ranged cavalry.
- Hand Shock infantry tag is used in regard to damage from dragoon and skirmisher units and ranged attacks of caroleans (but not mercenary variants like Fusilier).
- Shock infantry is used in regards to melee attacks from heavy infantry and ranged attacks of mercenary variants of caroleans (but not caroleans)
- light ranged cavalry is used for damage of foot archers and riflemen and bolas warrior
- the special tag of eagle runner knights is used damage of foot archers and riflemen and bolas warrior and all the multipliers are exactly the same. It’s completely useless might as well take the tag away give them the light ranged cavalry tag so they don’t make a mistake and overlook them when a new skirmisher or foot archer is added.
Currently its effectively the same due to the nicheness of the unit
But all that it takes is another unit to be designed in a similar mould but have some weird interactions and it would kinda fuck the counter system
The devs has a liking for niche counter siuations so I think the tag should stay so we can have that niche in the future, we can add more symbols if we need to

iirc it doesnt have the abstract infantry tag so artillery dont deal bonus damage. the only reason cannon perform somewhat ok is that their base HP as a single unit is low so the cannon has chance to kill a unit in a single shot
