What would we like to see for aoe2 in 2026?

Yes it is, think I want to talk and it better.

Eltz Castle is my preferred choice.

I find this comment really funny, since to me this looks like probably the most convincing castle in the game. I’m from England and grew up near a castle that looks very similar. Meanwhile, actual German castles tend to look like unrealistic fairy tale buildings to me.

I agree it doesn’t fit Teutons well. It looks too Norman. I’d actually have kept it for Vikings personally.

To me, the castles that look like toys (but not Lego) are the underscaled East Asian ones.

I have to add my own caveat; I see it from a different perspective. I find it difficult to integrate when I try to incorporate it into my maps. Visually, it’s hard to combine with the others. But you’re right, as a Norman castle, it’s very fitting. As for Teutonic castles, I have different images in mind. For a Teutonic scenario, I ultimately used the Bohemian castle. I also find the Burgundian and Hungarian castles more appropriate.

But I approach the game from a completely different angle than most other players anyway. For me, it’s solely about the visuals and atmosphere. I don’t actually play the game in the traditional sense.

Does anyone know or can do a summary about what we know/rumors about the two new unknown DLCs registered in steamdb?

Rumors recently surfaced about a South/Mesoamerica DLC. That could at least explain one of the files.

I would personally like a Meso DLC, it would be a nice way back to mainstream medieval DLCs

So what do we know??? nothing.

However in regards to the more recent of the two, 4073510, it seems likely it might somehow tie into the new naval changes that are coming sometime next year. There’s some other hints it might be a south american dlc. Perhaps those are somehow one and the same.

In regards to the older one, we can infer from the appID’s that it was registered closer to 3K than alexander. Considering 3K looks like two DLCs that were combined, and the DLC files also support that conclusion, and the last time that app was updated was september of 2024, I think it’s safe to say that whatever the second half of the 3K dlc was used to be that app, and then it was later combined with the older and more mature previous app, and the second app hasn’t been touched since.

If I had to guess, the 3K stuff was the older stuff and the Khitanguts and Jurchens represent the newer stuff. It’d explain why there are no campaigns for the medieval civs, but the 3K “forces” do have campaigns. They were farther along with the 3K stuff and the medieval stuff was tacked on later, and left relatively undeveloped.

There are also some circumstances surrounding V&V that might also support the theory that the 3k stuff is the older stuff.

Again we can’t know this for sure, but it seems quite likely that V&V was created at the last minute to fill the March 2024 release date that BFG was originally supposed to have, but had to be pushed back. It’s obvious BFG was more difficult to make than previous DLCs. completely new skins, architecture sets, campaign choice system, and brand new scenario selection UI. So we can infer BFG was already a large investment, and if development ran long, then it would then only be even more costly.

It makes a lot of sense if you have a novel but costly side project, that you’d be incentivized to try re-packaging that technical investment into other similar DLCs, especially if you were content with not investing additional resources into new skins and architecture sets. Yes Chronicles has a focus on history, and 3k is a fantastical re-telling of a fantastical re-telling of history, but otherwise they are quite similar.

It is also theorized that sales of BFG were
less than what MS had hoped for. Now BFG was released just two months after the second app was registered. So now you’re in the position where you’ve created a second DLC to help recoup the large expenditures of the first, and then the first underperforms. Even if BFG is your favorite DLC, you have to acknowledge it wasn’t conceived for, or marketed as, being for everyone. It didn’t have medieval content and it didn’t have multiplayer content. Likely that did not help it’s sales, and MS realized this. So now 3k seems it will repeat the mistakes, insofar as sales are concerned, of BFG. What are you to do?

Well
you do have this other DLC, with actual medieval civs. And if we make all the civs available for MP, then we can present this as being a “regular” DLC. So by combining the DLCs, they’ve now fixed their sales problem while still re-utilizing stuff they developed for BFG.

Since many players are often skeptical of certain developments, how about introducing a completely new mode in the future?

This could combine things like reskins, ideas from the Chronicles, or mods, while keeping the base game—especially with regard to multiplayer—as purist as these players want and as might even be necessary for multiplayer.

For this “new” mode, the developers could collaborate with modders. There’s already a lot of mods available, from purely visual enhancements to completely different gameplay depths. This could include aspects like economics/trade or diplomacy.

It would also be much easier to reuse elements from a now-discontinued game like Age of Empires 3 without affecting the overall gameplay.

This new/additional mode could become a true playground for a multitude of new ideas or expansions based on Age of Empires 2.

Get 3 kingdoms out!!!

Devs, will there be more variants for existing animals like the domesticated herdables? I saw there are now black, brown male and female sheep in the AOE4. Can this be included in AOE2DE? Also bulls (the model exist in game!), and a few types of dogs.

  • A way to privately send mods to your friends without having to go through mod publishing which generates a public post in the forums. Everyone doesn’t need to see what we create, or the titles thereof.
  • Having to use 3rd party cloud services or 3rd party direct IP connection to send the files to them and re-construct the mod paths on their machine, etc. is a little unnecessary, time-consuming, antiquated, and inconvenient for all parties

You can set your mode visibility to unlisted and share link with your friend.

You can turn this off. I hosted a couple of map packs for a tournament I host and don’t want to bloat the forums with auto generated posts. Just untick this option:

Thanks, are you sure it doesn’t make a new thread in the forum still and just auto-lock it right away so nobody can reply in it? Only ask because I’ve seen threads that seem to look like that before (auto-locked), and the mod submission page isn’t fully clear, as I mention here:

New thread in forum are not created unless you tick the checkbox for Allow Discussion.
