What would you like to see in Myth Retold?

Just picking the Mayans would be the best choice, in my opinion.
Mayans are both ancient enough and rich in myths, gods and monsters; but I get your point too, a mix between aztecs and maya has its appeal.

I don’t think mixing 2 civilisations is a good idea.
It would be like making Norse, Celts and Greeks one civilisation.

I know we are getting the Chinese, but man do I want the Japanese to be added too. I know it’s unlikely, but hopefully, one day they add them.

I agree mixing two or more pantheons together isnt a good move at all.

I believe the Japanese are one of the most likely to be added in the future.
Maybe not the next civilisation after the Chinese though.

Japanese are generally very popular in AoE too and are in all AoE games.

They could be named Yamato like AoE1 again though.

I am in favour of mixing civilisations if they share the same Pantheon though like different civilisations from Mesopotamia.

I looked it up, and apparently gunpowder in China dates back to the first millennium AD, which overlaps with the portrayal of the Norse in AOM. So some kind of gunpowder tech for the Chinese (e.g. fire arrows, which might have been in use as early as the 900s AD) wouldn’t be too “anachronistic” IMO (as if classical Greeks, Bronze Age Egyptians, and early medieval Norse being portrayed as contemporaneous weren’t introducing enough anachronisms into the AoM world).

How do you balance gunpowder versus archers and swords? Fire arrows could work, but it makes no sense why the other Pantheons cannot do the same in that case.

Mechanically fire arrow was a rather different weapon compared to fire lance though, it was a very rudimental gunpowder weapon, a precursor of the fire lance and the other gunpowder weapons.

Fire arrow is still very late (the first serious use of fire arrow in warfare is dated around 1000 AD) compared to the first norse who came to the rest of Europe (around 800 AD).

Fire arrow would be a bit less non-sensical than fire lance for sure, but I’d avoid gunpowder weapons at all nonetheless.

We are getting Chinese, but that does not prevent Japanese from coming. In some way you could say it actually gives more reasons for Japanese to come as well, if they plan to make new campaign that is connected as the original one was, than Japanese and Middle-East civ would make most sense.

Then there are other facts, people that want Aztecs don’t realize that human sacrifices are controversial topic for big company like Microsoft that avoids these topics. Or the fact that Atlanteans are kind of already monstrosity based on American, Roman and Greek. Also the popularity might just be artificial, it might show as actually not being viable for reaching the targeted sales and expanding the market.

Finally we are getting two DLCs in less then 1 year, so it’s very likely they wanted to work on art that can be partially reused to reduce the cost.

If anything Japanese are one of the most likely candidates as they are present in all other age games and Japanese culture is one of the most the popular culture in the West.

You bring up valid points. I can see them going either way, so time will tell. I hope it’s good either way!

I’m personally more hoping for mesopotamians, romans and celts but yes, japanese would also be very cool. If we get japanese at some point i hope they will not be too medieval but more ancient in some way.

I am also hoping for the Japanese as well. Their aesthetic designs are quite different from the Chinese actually.

This 1000%. Hope the devs consider this.

I would say a time period between Kofun (250–538AD), Asuka period (538–710), Nara period (710–794), and Heian period (794–1185) would be decent.

The Heian period Japanese would fit nicely and snuggly with the Norse’s Viking period.

Slow and expensive tech. Easy. No machine guns or bombard cannons.

The Aztec pantheon is well known and much better recognised than the Mayan one. But the Mayan one has its interesting elements like heavy jaguar, bird and calendar focussed aspects and many deities were overlapping. And with that you settle the New World civ angle in a swoop. Japanese may be too similar to the Chinese at this stage. After the Mesoamericans (there is a user-mod online for a template), they should take on the Mesopotamians.

If they do add Japanese as a DLC civ, I know who I want for their Titan. Though admittedly it would require some permission from his copyright holder.

If the game is the same, it seems to me that the villager production time of 14 seconds is very low, one would have to spend more time on queuing 4-5 villagers and more time on making houses, unless the houses are very cheap; Maybe they didn’t complain about this before because of the use of the automatic queue, for me 17 seconds or more is optimal

You also have to keep Atlanteans in mind that have Citizens instead of workers that take 35 seconds to make:

I’d like to see auto-queue for villagers and military units.

I have always liked the Golden Gift so extra missions would be nice. These side missions add depth to an already awesome storyline.
