When Stormgate launches AOE4 must be in good shape to survive

Stormgate Vs Age Of Empires IV

Stormgate will release like aoe iv with a lot of missing features.

Within in its first year will fly past aoe iv cause they have there team 100% working on the one game.

Not like microsoft did to aoe 4 and still aoe2 is there favourite child, so doesn’t give aoe4 much hope

Stormgate wins with the second highest RTS player base after starcraft 2 lol

SC2 have a way more player than all aoe, competitive and casual player (so being a fast game don’t seem to be an issue, you can be slow at sc2, you wont be a pro, that’s all).
That plus, what “coop campaign, army personalised” have to fast fingers? It’s pure casual features

Stormgate will release with high skill PvP in mind, while lacking single-player features.
People will get bored 1-2 weeks later and abandon the game.
Even for free people dont play such games.

Right now, there is simply no true old school RTS in development,
they all want a piece of E-Sport pie, that did rot away over 2 decades ago.

Yes, but you have the original WC3 and SC2 devs working on it… It would be very rare for it to fail… From the images I saw that it looks good, at least conceptually speaking…

it’s highly depends on: price or f2play
and what “features” they will be missing.

Remember as devs were saying “we were thinking on removing water from AOE4”.
Now, i believe they SHOULD not release with water. → less bugs + more time + available DLC in a year or two.

yes, Dota is boring or CS (with new record of 1.5mln players at a time).
so boring games.

yes, nobody plays dota.

he’s specifically refering to RTS since 2010 (except SCII)

do we need comment further?
Let’s remove The most successful game from selection. genius.

that most successfull game had to switch direction towards more PvE and user content over esports to truly thrive
small quote for you: you cannot artificially create an esport, you have to make a great game first and naturally gain audience, then slowly an esport MAY appear

on what DATA you make this conclusions?

17 years of experience with the RTS genre, and seeing too many RTS games bomb last decade by repeating initial mistake of SCII, overfocusing on 1v1 ladder and esports, SCII survived due to name and korean following at the time, all the games after had neither, won’t draw this any further as your critical thinking doesn’t seem to work particularly well

now on stormgate itself, i want to for once see some innovation in this genre again, mechanically and otherwise

just SOOO inconsistent:

What happens with sc2 is it success or not?

All == RTS games?
What games? AOE4? There was No huge RTS projects since sc2.
And aoe4 arguably focused on PvP, considering the state(responsiveness) of the game + promotion as HISTORY lessons. Throwing pocket money into tournaments(which btw being done by COMMUNITY) != focusing on PvP. They even did not hire pro league, but throw money to someone to organize tournaments. 100% focus on PvP [sarcasm]

And you so narrow minded with RTS after 2010, but without SC2…(0.5 huge projects were released in last 10 years without CoH)

as you refused to compare RTS with other genres/games and search for solutions from other genre experience…
→ you probably want smth else… not innovations.

first person to call me inconsistent, not that i feel the need to bother with folks like you, call me whatever pleases you, don’t give a shit

And I have more than 20 years of experience in RTS and I tell you that a game of this genre, in the middle of the year 2023, must focus on the casual and competitive environment at the same time, separated from each other, reducing its learning curve and that be a more social game, where the team game can also be competitive.

To me it seems like AoE4 doesn’t know exactly what it wants to be. For casuals I’d say there’s not enough content available and for Esports with lack of micro the skill ceiling feels flat. However, patching is mainly focused on Esports. Maybe they should have implemented a casual and competitve game mode in the first place to satisfy both parts of the community. E.g. mega random could have been played with current settings and ranked game mode with a lil bit faster pace, maybe more micro involved.

When AoE4 launched SC2 was the game with the biggest potential for AoE4 to gain players. You can even see a huge player drop on the SC2 ladder when AoE4 was released. However, I have a hard time imaging that many SC2 players would be satisfied with AoE4 because it is just way too slow and has such powerful defensive structures. If I remember correctly Lucifron has also said that he didn’t play that much AoE4 in 2022 since the meta was rather defensive.

When it comes to AoE2 players (probably second largest game for AoE4 to gain players) I have no idea what the reasons were to not switch to AoE4. There was literally no player drop on AoE2’s community so I’d assume the fast majority just didn’t like it from the very beginning.

Warcraft is a notable example, dota was created as a game mode for casual players.
It was not made with esports in mind. It was made to entertain players by creating an almost entirely different way of playing the game. Soon, many casuals enjoyed it. They repeatedly played it against each other. Soon, it had players from CS pro teams, then the game mode became a true esports game. Lots of tournaments were announced. People loved it. Not just esports, but mostly casuals. The difference between casual and esport players are players play the game to enjoy and win (casuals) or to play the game and win a prize (esports).

After a few years, DOTA2 was announced to have its independent game mode as a full game.
Mostly, casuals play DOTA2, as it can run on potato PC and is free. Lots of its events offer giveaway items that can be sold or used in the game that offer various effects and different skins etc. Just by enjoying the game, players get rewarded. Counter-Strike is also the same. It was built by casuals. People love to play against each other, but many just don’t play in tournaments. It is mostly the casuals watching the tourneys, not the esports themselves! It is like Olympic champions don’t watch themselves in a stadium or on a TV, they perform and casuals just watch them. Without a huge number of casuals, you cannot have a huge tournaments!
A very simple theory that almost all scientists agree with.

the rhythm is fine since you must be attentive to different places, regarding the walls there are threads giving suggestions

Isn’t about the defensiveness only.

Is sc2 every little skirmish is dynamic and interesting, involves precision.

Strategies are plenty for each race, units are vast different and you can create your own playstyle no matter what civ you choose.

The reason people from sc2 continue playing here is because of money, demu said it’s too hard to compete in sc2.

If you are 25+ , 30+ rts gamer you want to provide money for your family and what better than playin aoe4 where the moneys are good and didn’t require too much to be able to get into that lvl.
Now I don’t say I am on that level, on the contrary, I wish I was but the game got me bored long time ago.

The reason I visit forums every day is to see if something changes.
If I have to choose historical period with tactics like ancient times or medieval than sci-fi I will always choose history based games.

The problem here is I don’t feel like I play different civilization, every single one feels the same with little economic changes

If you want to be slower pace and more strategy like, good, make weather, food supply, castle sieges, trap holes, purpose of hills the list can go on and on, that way everyone will have historical blast while playin rts and no matter how fast or slow the game is if you can make it to feel like I play certain civilization people will have a blast even the games are 90 minutes.

On the other hand you have esports.

A lot of people don’t like fast pace games, micro intensive, split decision ###### ### that is e-sport, that’s how people compete.

There is dynamics, diversity, fast adaptation, huge attention without time to just chillin on the map.
If we see Counter strike, you can die within the first 10 sec if awp hits you, if you see starcraft you can die to first reaper at 2 minute if you don’t defend it while also have to scout whole game because the game is so diverse. Street figher or tekken, this games literally need you to look in the future because half second late game could be over. That’s what hype people and that’s why every single tourney have great games to be remembered.

On the other hand Aoe 4 wants to be historical accurate which doesn’t happen, plenty of stuff and units aren’t suppose to be there like unique Malian units , there wasn’t gunpowder in Malian empire…

Wants you to pump 120+ villagers like if you manage kingdom or something but fails at that too.

If you want something similar focused on your base more than the fight itself you can get some interesting stuff from paradox games like Imperator rome, Europa universalis, Crusader kings.

So basically from 200 supply more than half of it is from boring villagers which cant do nothing interesting.

There is no diversity in gameplay, archer is archer, horse is horse while there can be so much different variation of horsemen and archers and infantry.

And on top of that pace is slow.

So lets summarize it :

  • Slow paced
  • Not diverse
  • Not battle oriented but also not civilization building
  • Not historically accurate

If someone ask me what this game is I wouldn’t be able to tell tbh.

Watched beasty vs marinelord, malians vs malians and what I was seeing was 30 horse A-click vs 30 horses, nothing die, nothing move, 1 min fight nothing happen. I was so impressed by that.
How can someone make so boring battle mechanics and people still like it.

I’ll continue read posts and hope developers make something before its too late but I wouldn’t think so.

As I see they are busy making money.

They have so much work on this game in the meantime they released another unfinished game like Company of Heroes 3. Thank God I didn’t buy it.

If they don’t make something innovative soon until Stormgate drop I am sure pro scene will die, like 100%.

It was quite similar with 12 villagers start in round 2. Mainly spears chasing spears I remember. It’s a shame, imo a very successfull formula could be to just mix SC2 with AoE2. Take some elements of special abilities and micro from SC2 and mix it up with the complex AoE2 economy and random maps and there you have a great basis for a good RTS that can have it all (not fully random maps but imo a lil bit of randomness makes quick decision making and creativity an important skill in the early game). I sometimes turn on twitch to follow the state of the game but it just looks like there’s a lack of strategic options in many situations. The game often forces you to build rams to end the game in feudal, deny trade or water to keep up with the opponent. That’s a pity because there should always be plenty of strategical options.

Let’s say your attacking your opponents base with many archers and at some point have to retreat because your opponent built horsemen or maa to counter and chase you. You move all the way back to your starting TC and are busy with alternately attacking 1 unit of your opponent to kill it and then move backwards again. That can take like a minute and more with super monotone micro. How can that be fun when there’s literally only one option left to get out of that unconvenient situation and when that option is super monotone with barely any skill involved? I don’t get it. I watch Vortix, Lucifron and Marinelord do it and immediately think that they must truly hate that mechanic.
