You know you can adjust the colors to anything you want in the accessibility menu? Something only available in AoEIIIDE btw.
Aren’t those unit models gorgeous, highly distinguishable and detailed, unlike AoEIV.

It is certainly possible that in 12 months AoE4 could have the same features that AoE2 presently has. That statement was true 12 months ago, as well. And even if in 12 months, the game still doesn’t have those features, it will still be true that in 12 months from then, it could have those features.
So just list out what are the features that took 20 years for aoe2 to implement (let’s pretend there is not a >10 year gap in that 20 years) that aoe4 currently has, instead of throwing such big arguments.
Contents? Not so different.
Graphics? Yeah we all know it is extremely more difficult to make 2015-ish graphics in 2020s than making 1999 graphics in 1999.
Oh documentaries! Shame on you aoe2!
Now what aoe4 is missing at release: color selection, random maps and civs, map editors. Let’s not talk about those obvious design decisions like unmanned siege or 100% accurate arrows.
Is any one of those extremely difficult to implement?
As an 2020s game with this price and this level of advertising you either at least have the basic functions this genre has taken for granted for 20 years, or meet up with modern standards. Of course it would be best to do both, but you should not fail in either.
I love when people use irony in arguments , as I said graphics are subjective and there are people who likes more the graphics of Aoe4 than aoe2 graphics.
It’s not about being difficult , it’s about time , Microsoft is a company who doesn’t like their projects to be delayed so probably they could afford a delay after delaying Halo Infinite .
Nobody knows! This is the fun catch , we don’t know NOTHING except what they said on the roadmap which sadly it isn’t enough information.
And I did not say anything about liking the graphics or not.
Model quality, resolutions, frame rates, etc. These are objective standards that aoe4 does do better than original aoe2 (in 1999! Great achievement!) but not better than other major 2020s games (nah that’s trivial).
But with that 20 years of development of gaming industry, that should not be anything exceptional.
Even though the final product may not be subjectively better with more work or not, the required workload and technical barriers are objective, and I cannot see how that of aoe4 in 2020s is any greater than aoe2 in 1999.
Great to know these would take 20 years or 12 months to implement anyway.
And again! I never said nothing about 20 Years Aoe4 will have that , as I said that was only the time aoe2 had in Total development time. (Yes , aoe2 have constant content so technically it’s still on development because it’s receiving updates!)
So the game has been updated for over 20 years .
And obviously when making a product you need to prioritize things over other things . Color picking wasn’t probably the priority in that moment .
For the love of god jimmy I know that aoe3 DE have amazing graphics and environmental textures but I still prefer the original Aoe3 graphics and I don’t like those colors of DE .
Almost every other RTS can implement color picking without careful prioritization, so they are released on time with color picking and without sacrificing anything else.
Now if you cannot, it at least means there is something wrong no?
And you still have not listed what are the features and functions that aoe2 got in that 20 years of update, which aoe4 already has.
Let’s not, because these are intentional decisions made for a specific purpose, instead of something that simply needs to be added (like colour selection, or modding tools).
Either you or I have a misunderstanding of what “not” means.
You were talking about things that were missing at release, and asking about if these things are extremely difficult to implement or not.
Arrow accuracy is an intentional decision made for this game. You can disagree with it, but it has nothing to do with what the game’s missing at release (or not).
The same goes for an intentional choice in animating siege equipment. I mean, maybe there was a technical reason why siege units don’t have a truckload of operators. But that’s still not something “missing”, it’s somewhere between technical polish and aesthetic preference.
I said these are intentional design decisions and are subjective so we should not talk about these in this discussion.
You corrected me that these are intentional design decisions and are subjective so we should not talk about these in this discussion.
Seriously, are you really triggered by keywords only? Because there is the word “missing” or “lacking” or “implement” or something in my post, you immediately went into berserk mode?
I think that I have stated that the game was rushed a lot of times . Color picking i think it is easy to implement once you have the base to it but obviously it wasn’t the priority , the game needed to be fully developed and it probably had balance issues even before the beta , which might explain why we have so many balance problems now .
Sigh.
HD graphics at launch
200 pop at launch
Functional online (I understand that the times which aoe2 was released the internet wasn’t the same but it’s a feauture)
Big mountains (in Aoe4 they don’t have any gameplay change except of LOD and range units being able to deal more damage to melee units which are still in its way to kill the range units)
An useful Wall gameplay
Camera Tilting (It’s not in aoe2 but it’s a newly added feature)
Neutral compatibility for Gamepass users to play with steam users (this tooked a while for aoe2 to get it work)
Lobby chat
Parties to invite friends which makes Multiplayer easier
Maestries
You can change biomes
Art of war (it released on the Aoe2 DE , not on launch)
And many others
Oh by the way , I read it wrongly , I thought you said which feautures aoe4 have but aoe2 doesn’t (or did get in its 20 years of development)
Okay. You have rush released a full-priced products with a lot of things missing.
You avoided risks of delaying the product.
You may also received a well amount of profits from those who do not really care about the missing features, those who bought the game by nostalgia, those who bought the game due to advertising, or those like you who would like to wait another 12 months before the game is complete.
Now, you even do not want people to criticize you for doing this?
Don’t you think it’s too greedy wanting to get everything?
Aoe2 (1999) had the graphics meeting up with the qualities of 1999.
Aoe2HD (2013) had the graphics meeting up with the qualities of 2013.
Aoe4 (2021) roughly had the graphics meeting up with the qualities of 2021. Let’s admit it for a while.
It may surprise you but technology advances, and people today with more advanced technology can do more difficult things much more easily than our ancestors.
@GorbMort here is someone who thinks a subjective design decision is essential. Floor is yours.
As we all know gamepass and steam existed in 1999.
Most of these things are natural developments of the gaming industry. So natural that a modern game would be bashed without them. And none of them is invented by aoe4 from scratch.
Do you think modern DIY airplane makers are more intelligent than the Wright brothers because they can make an airplane that can fly much easier?
Oh. I mean, you already mentioned them. I didn’t realise you meant “let’s not” literally, since you got to mention them. Seems a bit silly to then insist nobody else can.
It’s not about which game had meet its technical requirements of that time , making games back in that time was surprisingly cheaper and this fact , Wich you can search on google by the way destroys your argument .
Possibly graphics weren’t the easiest thing to make in that time neither but the game was in fact cheaper to make .
And since why I did reply to you was because “Things Aoe4 have in its launch that aoe2 did get in its 20 years of dev” and that’s why I did said about graphics , because it did took 10 years to have HD graphics for aoe2.
So I don’t know why you bring to your argument that we are in another times in where graphics could be easier o make when it’s actually not. It cost more.
Microsoft is a solid company , wich have released good titles and surprisingly the king of 2021 , it is greedy to release a game wich isn’t ready?
It’s disappointing but I think MS didn’t knew neither the potential of Aoe4 so they thought players wouldn’t be so angry at their game .
After seeing the success Aoe4 was in steam , dominating the player counts for over 3 weeks after its launch I think the franchise will get more support over time .
But you did said “things aoe2 got in 20 years and Aoe4 got in launch” buddy I was pointing things and you are coming back with inessesary trash lmao
I don’t understand you
It’s a change , it looks good and I think it’s not a bad thing either ![]()
Data please.
You cannot let others google your evidence for you.
Because the development literally stalled for aoe2 in those 10 years.
Do you mean the development of aoe4 started in 2011?
Maybe I didn’t state my points clear enough.
Aoe2 was released with all the essential functions for a game in 1999, in 1999. It later received “modern” updates to meet the standards of the time.
Aoe4 was released with those “modern” features that aoe2 as a game in 1999 got later (and none of which is invented by aoe4 from scratch because all other games at the same time had them), and without some extremely basic functions that were already made with no problem in 1999, *in 2021.
Whether you have trust in the future or not, whether the company made much profit or not, the state at release is not good, especially when compared to its predecessors at the time of their release. I guess nobody would question that no?
So, if that is a problem, why shouldn’t people criticize that?
As a consumer I only care about the product I get. I do not care how much money they make out of it, what marketing strategies they use, or who is responsible fot it.
They are not going to give me a share of their profits if I count how much money they made from it. Rushed release is bad, and any marketing strategy has its risks. You already avoided the risk of missing the right timing for the release. Too greedy if you also want to avoid the risk of being criticized.
Lmaoooooooooooooooooo. (I assume this will give a buff to one’s arguments?)
