[poll] Should hero units take 5-10 pop space?

In a pop capped fight with equal numbers, for example team games, the heros will be very powerful and OP. To fix this they could take 5-10 pop space.

  • 5 pop space
  • 10 pop space
  • 1 pop space

From an AoM perspective i’d say 2 or 3 pop space is fine.

There should be an option that says ā€œI don’t want heroesā€.

1 pop space, of course. Ideally, their civilizations shouldn’t have been in the base game.

Also, the aura boost thing is a boring feature, and I know a lot of players think the same.

To infinity and beyond pop space

Borrowing Heroes from AoM and wherever else (AoE3?) is annoying and risky enough for AoE2. Hereos (or any unit for that matter) taking more than 1 pop space is a hard no from me, as a long time AoE2 fan. If this were actually a thing, this is one reason I will immediately seek a refund for my DLC pre-purchase

AoE isn’t and shouldn’t be a birth control management simulator, as if the leader of our empire is like:

  • ā€œEveryone of this great and mighty empire! Here me out. We have, sadly, reached our 200 population hard cap… no thanks to our ā€œHeroā€ who takes up multiple population spots. So, from this day forward, I decree that no new births shall occur in my empire until other units die or our gameplayer overlord sitting behind the screen with mouse and keyboard in hand presses the ā€œdeleteā€ key on some of us. You and that player shall watch the population ticker in the upper-left of your screen like a hawk and once it falls below 200, you may have another grown baby or create another unit. I deem this to be a good and fun mechanic for our empire, for both you as citizens, and also that mysterious player controlling us behind the screen.ā€

To OP, please don’t give the devs ideas like this for AoE2, lol. It’s probably how heroes made it into AoE2 in the first place. There are other ways to balance the game without having to resort to the silly and cheap ā€œx unit takes up 2 or more population spaceā€ mechanic

if there are other ways to make it less population efficient and OP in teamgames tell me then, bc without nerfing the unit itself you can’t. If you can find another way say it then

I’ll leave it to the devs to figure out which stats or whatever need balancing. They get paid for it.

But for quick ideas…

  • Maybe some units in every civ have a buff against heroes. You know, counter-units… like most any unit has in the game. This would be the most logical route, imo. (No, don’t make new heroes just to counter other civ heroes.)
  • Maybe once heroes die, they are gone for the rest of the match and the entire civ weakens a small percentage overall. They’re great while they last, but at least there’d be some risk with using the civ and losing the hero. Once hero is gone, either nerf defenses or nerf attack strength, as a ā€˜lost morale’ component… as much as I’d hate this stuff for AoE. But, hey, heroes in SP/MP games opened that can of worms, sigh.
    • Actually, I hope heroes die for good, and don’t just kneel down providing a perma-spotlight to light up the map and track enemy movements, like I think Explorers do in AoE3. That’s one of my least favorite things about AoE3; the explorer is some immortal creature, as if we’re playing Age of Mythology or something
  • Maybe heroes are extremely expensive. Maybe heroes are slow moving. Maybe heroes are quite susceptible to a certain unit type (archers, or infantry, or cavalry, or siege). Maybe heroes are good in bursts, but then have a cool-down period (like monks cooldowns)… as much as I don’t like the thought of, essentially, stamina meters for non-monk units in AoE

Maybe you, the community, and the devs can think of better, more ā€œAo2 appropriateā€ ideas that stick better to the AoE2 canon of gameplay mechanics we’ve all grown and love.

Hereos aren’t the first or only powerful unit to come to AoE2. And we’ve never had to take up multiple population spots for them. There are many ways the game could be balanced. Some ways are more annoying than others, and I think taking up multiple population spots is one of the most annoying ways possible

PS: There’s not much that I can find, but I might have found the tiny AoE2 community sparks that resulted in heroes coming into AoE2 SP/MP civs. As with other things in the DLC, maybe not the most requested idea ever:

hmm, i think a good approach is no remaking them once they die and hussars/scouts/light cavalry type units (including everything of light horsemen class like steppe lancers and magyar huszars) would get massive bonus damage vs them, Like a ā€œassassinationā€ of some sorts. They have aobout 500hp so +110 would be a 5 tap vs light horsemen class units

Ooh, that’d be interesting. Could be good!

I haven’t seen yet how powerful the heroes actually are, tbh, but I like the ā€˜assassin’ type theory. The fact that scouts, etc. are pretty cheap, though, could be a detriment to the idea. Should the counter to heroes be relatively inexpensive units that can be spammed? I’m not so sure yet

Hussars/Light horsemen are weak so its not much of a issue if someone spams them, just protect the hero in the middle of the army.

A new tech could be added called ā€œassassinationsā€ that unlocks the bonus damage but costs like 500 food or something so its not a cheap answer

trying to find a solution here, bc the devs are not gonna remove em (most likey)

Wait, I just realized… The Japanese are The Anti-Hero civ! They have the Ninja in the Scenario Editor already, which will obviously be their second UU, that already has a damage bonus against Heroes!

Samurai is strong vs UU, and heros are put underneath the unique units area in tech tree, so…

just checked and heros do NOT have the unique unit class, they have the ā€œHeros and Kingsā€ class

I see heroes as a killable civ bonus.
Certainly way too weak to be worth the price for their combat abilities, they are weaker then a single War Elephant.

I don’t want any solution other than them being gone.

Because they won’t be bothering me online, as I will quit on the sight of Wu, Shu, Wei in multiplayer.

I decided to do the same myself. Most of my opponents play random anyway. But if you really decided to buy the DLC to play those kingsdom civs… sorry, I dont care.
