Works great that new system. First game attempt immediate crash and then for banned 3 min. No more words for that. Maybe they want to move people to aoe4 11
I get the intention behind this fix. But there are some back fires. After the update, some players I team up with, get their games crashed on the loading screen. What do you have me doing? To play a 3 v 1 game just because? Not even my fault, not even my teammates fault, but yours, but sorry, I get the f penalty. Itâs been like 4 games now, and ofc I insta quit after my teammates game crash. Dev logic: screw you, now you get a ban, and you and you, everyoneâs getting baned for our mistake. FIX IT! Or take It down, end with unfair penalties.
Is there any information on how long the Alt f4 penalties are? How often till Permaban? What is the stages of punishment? How long and how much do these penalties get? Do they reset? Are they depended on how many % you disconnected/dodged/alt+f4ered?
Why is this stuff not communicated to the players like in Lol, CSGO and many other games. Why do they just announce stuff and implement stuff without any details?
The update that just went live is insulting to a large portion of the player base.
For those of you that donât know already, what Iâm referring to is this, from 54480:
Alt+F4 & Queue Dodging: Included in this update is an initial measure aimed at discouraging queue dodging. Players who Alt+F4 out of queues will receive progressive timeouts and their ability to rejoin the queue will be affected depending on the frequency with which they disconnect to work around the matchmaking system. This is being deployed for the first time in this Update and weâll be monitoring activity and feedback to see where adjustments may be needed.
This is a disruptive band aid solution to a problem that has not been fixed. The problem is: there are players that want to play only certain maps and are unable to do so with the current DE matchmaking system.
The ranked matchmaking system is challenging and fun and a great way to match up evenly with players of similar skill but some maps and playstyles are not enjoyable for all players. The maps with the most differentiation and are the largest source of Alt+F4s are: Arabia, Arena, Black Forest, Islands and Nomad. These maps demand vastly different playstyles and require somewhat unique skill sets. Players opt to play only the maps they find fun and engaging with their skill set and will drop out of a map they donât want to play. Simpler: Some players only like and have fun on certain maps and only play those maps. This is not new, this is how the original ranked system worked and how the ranked system worked in HD. Whatâs new is the matchmaking system as opposed to the lobby system.
This proposed solution in 54480 treats those players like theyâre wrong and bad for liking those maps and playing the game the way they want. Yes, I agree the Alt+F4 problem is a real problem and should be addressed but this idea is very bad for those players who feel forced to play a map they donât like in a playstyle they are not competent with. This proposed solution will serve to limit the amount of queue dodgers at any one time but not because they are not there and not upset about the map pool, it will only hide them away and push them into a corner so as not to bother the other players. Great, now that player base is alienated and punished for trying to have fun with a beloved, cherished game. Mission Unaccomplished.
Further, this proposed solution is biased towards those want to play Arabia-style maps (More open maps with fixed starting points and focus on early aggression) because those are the most common map type. Every rotation there are a few maps that cater to those players (And fair enough, as there are more players that want those map types than any other) while there is only one Nomad, Islands, or Black Forest styled map. For instance in the current rotation of Team Random Map there is Arabia, Scandinavia, Mega Random and Valley for open map favoring players whilst there is one water map, two enclosed style maps (Arena and Hill Fort), one Nomad style and Black Forest. The map pool is already catered to those who wish for a certain playstyle and now with the current update the ones who do not wish for that playstyle in their games are being punished further.
A solution that serves all players would be this: infinite map bans. All players get to play only the maps they wish to play and there are no more queue dodgers. No more queue drops and everyone gets to play the maps they want with other players that want those maps. This is how it was in the original, this is how it was in HD. This is how it was for 20 years, why change this now and in this way? Who is to say how the game must be played and that if someone wants to play a certain map they must be punished? This game has garnered the love of people for 20 years precisely because youâre able to play the game in so many ways in so many styles with so many civs on so many maps exactly how each individual likes to play it. Thatâs Age of Empires. This proposed solution is an insulting deviation from 20 years of multiplayer AOE II and I and others are unhappy with the idea that players are now being punished for playing the game they want to play how they want to play it.
Reconsider this proposed solution and include all players in the fix. Thank you.
I get that people donât want to play certain maps, but alt+F4 was never a good answer because that ruins the game for allies and opponents.
Unlimited map bans seems like a really easy fix, at least for 1v1. I understand that the limited map bans allow any two players to match, but this is not necessary. An unlimited ban system would work exactly the same, but once a matched player was found it would check if there are any compatible maps between the 2, and if not it would simply place both back in the queue without notifying them that any potential match occurred. Obviously players with no bans would accept the first match, and players with many bans would have higher queue times, this is fine.
yes i absolutly abhore the new changes. players should be able to play ranked games on the map they want. this current system just punishes players who play on a single account. people will just make alt accounts to get around this stupid punishment thus creating even more problems because of smufing. the devs should be working to apease the playerbase not punish them
Nobody has posted Michael eating popcorn yet?
It says a lot about the game, that people are more willing to waste time hitting ALT-F4, restarting the game and trying to match again, than to play maps they donât want to play. The match making system already favoured those that want to play open maps, and wasted the time of those who donât. Either you waste your time 30 minutes to an hour playing a map you donât want to play, or you waste your time by âqueue dodgingâ, restarting your game and waiting for another match.
This update just is not going to fix anything. People who prefer certain maps will still find less time wasted by enduring the penalty time, than by playing a game they donât want to play. The developers have found a way to shift the blame for this imperfect match making system onto players, penalizing them instead of designing a system that doesnât force players to play matches on maps that use radically different play styles they are either not accustomed to, or just donât like.
Fair point. If someone really doesnât want to play something thereâs no way to force them. Even if Alt+F4 or resigning are prevented, they can always just walk away from the PC. I donât encourage doing this, but any real solution needs to address the root cause of player map choice.
The fact that the majority of the matches is done on Arabia and Arena does not imply that the majority of the playerbase is not willing to play on other maps. According to the current status of these polls ([Poll] Do you use Alt-f4 in ranked? Don't click unless you will vote!, [Poll] How often do you use Alt-f4 in ranked? Please don't click unless you will vote) 67% of the players never alt+f4. If these polls are representative, then the timeout punishment does not affect the majority of the playerbase.
A large portion of the community has been requesting some action to reduce Alt-F4. I really appreciate the developers making an effort. I expect they will make adjustments if they find this negatively impacts a significant portion of the player base.
So far, it seems most of the hate is coming from people that admit they regularly Alt-F4.
If you want to play only a single map all of the time, play unranked. If you want to play only a single map and only with a favorable map generation, play offline against the computer. A ranked player is expected to be more versatile.
Game just crashed and now i need to deal with a 30 min penalty. Thanks dev! Fix one thing and break 3 in the process!!

You got a 30 minute ban for your first dodge? Or was this cumulative?
I guess it was cumulative, this exact thing happened like 2 or 3 times yesterday when update was released. Now, ~18hrs later, first game i try to play today, crash into penalty. Those first penalties were all 10 min.
yea its comulnative. im on my 2 hour time out. im unsure what the time limit for comulnativeness is if their even is one
How does it determine what is a legitimate resign and what is map dodging? Is it a time limit? Does combat need to occur before a game is considered legit? What if you get lamed so severely that the game is obviously won? What about those games where someone does something stupid like spending all their wood on a mining camp next to a forest, or building two mills at the start instead of houses?
Is any combat defeat considered a full game? Can you go brawl with enemy villagers and steal /kill sheep until they finish you with TC fire? Or run unloomed vills into a pack of wolves?
This new system raises a lot of questions.
Edit: What happens if you simply delete your TC and starting villagers? Is that a resign or a defeat by conquest?
i think the only solution player can do is go afk. since resigning is punished players are forced to just wait until they are defeated. thx to the devs even more time gets wasted by all players
Been able to play 5 tg in a row without a single alt f4 or disconnect! Its fantastic.
No doubt there are still problems but this is so much better than before
105 voters is not representative of the player-base. Youâd need a way bigger sample size to give you accurate numbers.
I really hate this kind of false democratic narrative.
The majority donât has the right to punish the minority just because itâs the minority.
We also donât say âwell there are less than 20 % afro-americans in the USA. So who cares if they arenât allowed to vote anymore, more than 80 % of the americans are unaffected by this.â Do we?
Even if I never alt+f4 iâm against punishment. It doesnât solve any problems cause the alt+f4 problem is housemade. You canât just cause unnecessary problems and then punish people for these problems to occur that were completely predictable to occur. Itâs not a solution, itâs oppression.
