The creators should see that we fans of this game care about its continuous development.
I really like AoE I, it’s special to me and the game has made me incredibly happy during the pandemic. And I just can’t stand something I love this much be treated this badly by the people who made it, AoE I is in a bad state right now and the devs need to fix it.
Latest update was three months ago, and I can’t beleave it’s been that amount of time already. We should keep discussing in order to show the owners of the franchise that we still care about this game, and that we would love more support and content being added. I am very happy with Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition getting downloadable content, yet I’d love some expansions for this beautiful game too! Come on guys, it’s been 23 years since Age of Empires 1 got anything new (other than a couple of features and improvements for modern times).
Honestly it took a lot of effort from us to bring out that last update too that fixed game breaking bugs and a few civ balance changes… It seems they don’t do anything unless we make 50 forum posts about the same topic until they are forced to bring out some small update to save face…
True.
We’ve already got it together easily.
Right now I would like improvements to the Hotkey Editor, better unit pathfinding, and a fix for the waypoint system which has been buggy since the first time I tried this game back in 2020. Would love more support in general, but if I had to choose between what issues to treat and which ones not, I would choose the latter.
Last update was already four months ago. Please, Microsoft, show this game some love and do not abandon it!
I don’t think we will get any update until christmas, they have other focuses now.
How until Christmas? This year was already one. Be a little more grateful.
My biggest problem with AOE1 at the moment is that my Multiplayer game lags out at the loading screen when I try to play my 3v 3 Custom maps.
I made two 3 v 3 maps, one called “Canaan” and the other called “Middle East” that I submitted on the Mods section. (Mods Single – Age of Empires) The lag-out problem has been happening since the last week and I heard that this is an ongoing problem since the last Update months ago. I have the latest Build (#46777), and am running my game with Steam on Windows 10. I used to be able to play these maps, but they lag out at the loading screen and after a few minutes of that screen, I get the Sync Error message. I had a friend host instead of me, and the game still lags out every time that I try to play the maps on Multiplayer.
I am mainly an AOE2 player but I love all the Age games and yesterday I logged in just to play some AOE 1 DE and I was just saddened by the state of this game. Mainly because it doesn’t even need that much attention to elevate to a completely superior experience (sure you can keep improving anything indefinitely but just a few minor improvements would really lift this game IMO and anything else above that would be a bonus). There are even things in this game that at least visually are even better than AOE2, some units are just gorgeous, and also the water and the ship animations are even better in this game. So with all that this would be my list of absolute essentials that would really reignite my interest in this game:
-
Improved pathfinding and general unit movement behaviour. The units move so clunkily in this game its just so sad to see. Now its obvious this team knows how to get this right because they have done an amazing job with AOE2 in this regard so why not just apply the knowledge to AOE1 as well?
-
Addition of Gates. This is just a must, there is no reason that gates should not be part of the game. Just add them in. They will still be easy enough to break down using catapults for offensive players so no reason to not have them. I also don’t buy this argument that they shouldn’t add them because the original game didn’t have them. If the original version of something just wasn’t that good, there is no reason to keep it. There are many features added in all 3 games in the DE versions that weren’t in the original so why this weird insistence that somehow the lack of gates is this sacred original feature that we can’t touch?
-
Faster projectile speed. Projectiles in this game move painfully slow and are just unnatural to look at, and this is one thing that really diminishes the sense of immersion for me in this game, obviously some ajustments will need to be made to compensate for this but I am sure forgotten empires will be able to figure that out.
-
Adding unit formation and aggression stances. Again no reason to not have this. Unit formations should be available after a certain age (Maybe the third age?) and aggression stance from the start, this will just help with controlling the units and thus make the game more enjoyable.
-
Limited ability to garrison units. I don’t think the town centres should shoot arrows but they could at least allow garrisoning of villagers in later ages, maybe from the second age? Also archers should be able to garisson in towers and those towers should shoot more arrows like in AOE2.
To me just these few small tweaks would really elevate the gameplay so much, its crazy to not include them specially since so much effort was put into remaking the game. I also don’t buy the argument that the game is unpopular and less people play so that’s why the devs don’t give it the attention it deserves. To me the lack of interest from the player community is a reflection of the lack of intereset shown by the devs. If the devs polished the game up a bit more I am sure more people would pay attention.
Hi, and welcome to Age1.
Nice to hear that there are actually still people who are rediscovering the game, even if only a little bit. I agree with you on the whole. Most of your points have already been discussed here in detail several times.
Totally my opinion.
I don’t think there is a topic here that has been more controversial.
To put it briefly: There are good reasons for and against.
The fact is that the devs said that there will definitely be no gates in Age1.
As long as the pathfinding remains so bad, the gates would probably be unsatisfactory at most.
I don’t know if you did, but usually you play the game on very fast.
Probably the same
problem as with the gates. If units are already sometimes stuck on trees, how will they manage to run in formation.
Apart from that - I personally don’t need it. It would be nice to have - but it’s cool without it.
It was much more important that they finally managed to introduce unit stances. That is already a big help.
Many greetings.
Yea I tried that but then the unit movement becomes way too fast and looks comical. The problem is projectile speed in relation to unit movement is the problem. Game speed changes both at the same rate so it doesn’t fix the issue.
Honestly, I can’t tell how realistic or unrealistic the projectile speed is. Anything is possible.
Nevertheless, I would advise you to set the game speed to almost.
I love all the Age of Empires games but the first Age of Empires has a special place in my heart, I remember when I was a little kid inserting my floppy disc into the computer to run the game and just have a blast (even if I wasn’t very good at that time haha).
I really hope that if not continuing to improve AoE1 DE that we get a new game after AoE4 with the ancient timeline as it’s my favorite period in ancient history. There is a lot of potentials to be had, and I hope that they aren’t afraid of going back to it just because of the low player base of the first game, even if I think that the reason for that is because they don’t focus on it the same way as AoE2 and AoE3 with new content and new civilizations, etc.
They said until, not since Christmas. They’re hoping for an update, that is, before Christmas 2021.
Wow you are a visonary sir. If only others shared your insight. I completely agree with all your requests.
Regarding path finding, I suggest these changes:
- Reduce unit collision/hitbox size
- Force minimum-range units to distance themselves from enemies, to attack them
- Replace the standard pathing with the CTRL (or ALT in some cases) + secondary click one
There’s a split opinion on this topic, and you can find lots and lots of discussion around it, specially on Steam. I personally agree this game should have gates on walls. Otherwise, we are still going to be forced to wall-off sections, build towers, etc., in order to increase our defenses.
I recommend NOT using 1x, but 1.5x game speed. 2x is just too fast/unrealistic for me. As for proyectile speed, I think arrows are fine. Maybe missiles should get a boost?
Indeed, unit formations since Bronze Age and being able to toggle aggressive stance on/off are two additions that would benefit this game greatly.
This is probably the most polemic request on your list, but you do have a point.
- Letting archers, villagers, and maybe even slingers garrison inside towers seems reasonable.
- Allowing non-military units, such as priests and villagers, to garrison inside town centers sounds interesting to me, since those units don’t have a chance most of the time. I would even go a little bit further: letting artifacts garrison inside town centers, so it is mandatory to destroy the TCs in order to gain control over them.
