I want Caribbean Sea Rovers.
Covers the Golden Era of Buccaneering - Buccaneers/Flibustier armies that fought on land (think commissioned sea rovers, with flag bearers, drummers and lots of muskets) as well sea taking on Spanish towns, forts and ships, using Tortuga and Port Royal as home bases, then onto the Golden Era of Pirates, where sea rovers have less/zero support from nations and go full pirate, establishing the Flying Gang’s pirate republic of Nassau.
Home City: Nassau, Bahamas - the Bahamas regardless of the Pirate Republic had always been a popular set of islands for Boucaniers, Buccaneers, Flibustiers and Pirates.
Imperial Age could take Sea Rovers to the 1730 to 1830 period where Caribbean Piracy was pretty much stamped out at the end of it. During this last period of piracy we had lots of privateers (pirates to the enemy nations of course) in the many North American and Latin American (Insurgente Privateers) wars of independence as well as the last pirates such as Lafitte and his pirate bases.
Most sea rover units are armed with muskets and pistols and multiple units are also armed with (weaker than normal) grenades, stinkpots or firepots as charged shots (automatic abilities after long cool downs). Sea rover units would be very expensive and take more pop slots to reflect not only their self-funded (and mostly top-notch, certainly better than Spanish equipment) weaponry, but their overall smaller size of forces (again, still not something to be sneezed at - there were piratical armies of sharpshooter buccaneers into the 1000s taking on tough fortress-protected cities).
Quirks for the Sea Rovers would be:
• The ability to Plunder from ships and buildings
• Very costly but well-armed and versatile units
• Can invite corrupt Governors in much the same way as Consulates - French, Dutch and English Governors allows legit support (though less Plunder and less unique pirate units)
• Almost infantry-only forces on land.
• ‘mini’ hero units in the form of Buccaneer Captains that boost the plunder rate.
• Ships that have a Captain garrisoned in can use the ‘boarding action’ ability - essentially a close range (aoe2) monk-style convert.
• Aging up would allow you to select a ‘haven’ port - a pirate friendly location (Petit Goave, Port Royal, St Thomas, etc) which gives you Federal style unique shipments.
• Can revolt to St Mary Island, Madagascar leading to some very tough pirate units (the Roundsmen) and native allies (Malagasy Warriors)
• Biggest weakness is against cavalry.
Some example units:
• Boucaniers - the OG buccaneers. Jerky-making pirates that hunt and later (age II onwards) skirmish on the side
• Freebooters - the sailor-musketeer buccaneers. Ex-English Civil War soldiers and French adventurers armed with Buccaneer Guns (loooooong barrel muskets), cutlass and later on, stinkpots (old school chemical weaponry)
• Forlorn Hope - Buccaneer Storming Party. Light infantry with grenades and axes for breaching walls.
• Sea Dogs - shock hand infantry. Cutlass armed sailors.
• Peragua - large sailing canoes that could carry many musket-wielding buccaneers as well as a swivel gun or too.
• Jamiaca Sloop - very fast but weak ship. Can be converted to a fire-ship.
Also to dispell a few things:
• Pirates/Buccaneers didn’t wear boots - they wore shoes or just barefoot.
• Peglegs and eyepatches were really not very common. Pirates had a really good insurance system so if you lost a hand you would be compensated for it and most likely would leave the Captain’s company.
• Whilst they used cutlasses, they much prefered muskets and pistols. And grenades, lots of grenades. They love gunpowder and were using flintlock weaponry before most national armies were fully equipped with them.
• Tricorne hats (Hollywood pirates) didn’t appear on pirates until after the 1730s (except maybe the odd Captain, landsman or grizzles Red Sea pirates of the pirate round). Most pirates wore fur caps, short brimmed hats (like bowler hats) and knitted caps.
• Sea Rovers were big fans of small boats and ships - only the late pirates took command of frigate-size ships. Most prefered Canoes, Peraguas and Sloops.
